Amplifier
A public-address amplifier sets how many areas can be addressed separately and how much speaker load the system carries. The figure most often read wrongly is the power rating: it is a total across all outputs, not a figure per zone, so a four-zone unit is not four times its rating.
How to choose
- Size it from a finished speaker schedule. Total the tapped power zone by zone, keep margin, then check the combined figure against the amplifier’s total. Do that sum before ordering, not after the speakers are on the wall.
- Settle the zone list first. Two areas belong in separate zones only when there is a moment at which one should be silent and the other should not. Zones drawn from the floor plan rather than from what happens in the building give you divisions nobody uses.
- Analogue or network control. On an analogue unit the speakers run on speaker cable and the zoning follows the wiring, so moving a zone later means moving cable. A network amplifier is configured instead, which buys scheduling and remote control, but the audio then depends on the network staying up.
- Where it lives. Rack space, ventilation and a supply sized for the unit matter in Egyptian plant rooms, where heat and dust are constant.
