How to choose

• Let the mounting surface decide the form. A solid wall takes a wall speaker, a tile ceiling takes a recessed unit, an open soffit or atrium takes a pendant hung down to where people are, a yard takes a horn. Settle the type first.
• Coverage is a drawing exercise, not a wattage figure. Set spacing against mounting height so the circles overlap. Wattage says almost nothing about whether an announcement is understood — more units at a modest level usually beat fewer running hard.
• A recessed speaker is only as good as the void above the tile. Check the depth, the ducting already in it, and how the unit is reached for service. On a retrofit that rules recessed models out more often than the specification does.
• Finish and colour are seen every day. Match the soffit rather than the walls, keep one finish across a space, and allow for sun, heat and dust outdoors.
