The DS-2CD1643G2-LIZU is the 4 MP varifocal bullet in Hikvision’s 1-Series: the Z is a motorised lens, driven from the head-end once the bracket is fixed, and the LI puts it in the same hybrid-light family as the -LIU and -LIUF models here. The gap is between footage that exists and footage that can be used. Almost every system records. Far fewer can produce, the morning after an incident, a file the client can hand to an insurer, a lawyer or a police officer without an argument.

Where it earns its place on a site

Specify it where footage will actually be asked for: the till, the loading door, the tenant entrance, the bays that generate damage claims. Then settle the part no datasheet covers, because four things decide whether a clip is usable at all.

The recorder’s clock must be right and stay right: footage timestamped forty minutes out is footage the other side gets to question. Somebody on the client’s staff must know how to export, and must have done it once, calmly, before they need to. The export must open on an ordinary computer, not a proprietary player nobody is allowed to install. And the thing handed over must be the original file, not a phone video of a monitor, which is what most people end up producing.

The moment a client needs footage is the worst possible moment to learn how to get it out, and ten minutes at handover is the entire difference. A camera that records and cannot export is an expensive way of being certain something happened.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• The time source for the head-end. Agree how the recorder’s clock is set and kept: a network time source, the client’s server, or a manual check written into the maintenance visit.
• Who will press export. Name the person on the client’s side, not the job title, and have them export a clip themselves in front of you before you leave. If nobody can be named, the system has no evidential value on the day it is commissioned.
• What the export has to open on. Ask which machine the clip will be viewed on and what it is permitted to run, then settle format and destination. If a proprietary player is involved, confirm IT will allow it.

Compatibility

Judge it on its export as hard as on its recording, and check an ordinary operator account can reach the export function, not just the admin login. Common questions on this model

How do we get a clip out when we need one?
From the recorder, not the camera. Log in with playback rights, pick channel and date, scrub to shortly before the event, mark start and end, and export to a USB stick or a network folder. Keep that original file untouched.

The timestamp on our footage is wrong. Does it matter?
Yes. A clip whose time does not match the incident report, the till roll or the access log is the first thing an opposing party attacks. Correct the clock, then note the offset in writing for clips already stored.

Who should hold the recorder password?
Two people at the client, one on site most days, and never the installer alone. More systems fail to produce footage because the password left with an employee than because a camera failed.
