Sixteen PoE ports, gigabit throughout, and no management interface at all. The DS-3E0518P-E/M is Hikvision’s DS-3E0 unmanaged tier, and the P in the code does the work: each camera takes power and data from one port. You rack it, you patch it, and nothing is left on it for anyone to change.

Unmanaged gets read as the budget option, which is the wrong way to read it. Nothing to configure means nothing to misconfigure; no web interface means no password for the next contractor to lose. On a standalone camera system on its own cabling that is not a compromise you accept for the price — it is the correct answer, and a managed switch nobody ever logs into is money spent on work you invented for yourself.

Where it earns its place on a job

It suits a sixteen-camera system that belongs to itself: a warehouse, a showroom, a clinic, a compound gate — cameras on their own cabling and their own recorder, maintained through you rather than a client IT department. Nobody will ask it for traffic statistics. It passes frames, and that is the whole specification.

The line does move, though, in four places: when the cameras share a network with the client’s office traffic; when somebody wants them on their own VLAN; when a fault needs diagnosing from an office rather than from site; and when an insurer or an IT manager asks in writing who can see what. Any one of those and unmanaged stops being right — not because it stopped working, but because you can no longer answer the question asked. If one is already on the table, price a managed unit such as the Hikvision DS-3E2528 full managed switch against this one before you commit. The cost of getting that call wrong is not the gap between two switch prices. It is a site visit every time something needs looking at, for the life of the system.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• Whose network — do the cameras get their own switch and cabling, or land on infrastructure the office traffic also uses? Own network, this is the right product. Shared, take it to the client’s IT before you quote.
• Who diagnoses a fault — with no remote access, every check is somebody physically at the switch. Confirm the site is close enough for that, rather than discovering it in month four.
• Handover — if the system passes to a tenant, an IT department or an insurer, ask now whether they accept equipment with no logs and no per-port visibility.

Compatibility

A standards-based Ethernet switch carries Hikvision cameras, recorders and third-party IP devices alike, and nothing on it has to be told about any of them. The real question is on the powered side: check each camera’s power requirement, and the total across sixteen ports, against both datasheets before you fill every port. Common questions on this model

Should we pay for managed instead?
There is no default answer, and anyone giving you one is guessing. Ask the four questions above. Four noes and managed is waste. One yes and unmanaged is a decision you revisit at your own expense.

If we outgrow it, is the switch wasted?
No. An unmanaged switch keeps working behind a managed one, so the usual path is to add management upstream and leave this unit feeding its sixteen cameras. You lose per-port visibility, not the hardware.

How do we tell it is working if we cannot log into it?
Through the recorder. The NVR’s device list shows which cameras dropped and when, and that pattern — one camera, one run of ports, or all sixteen at once — narrows a fault down before anyone drives out.
