The DS-2CD1723G0-IZ is a 2 MP Hikvision 1-Series network dome, and the two letters on the end are why it turns up on retrofit quotes more often than on new builds. The -IZ suffix means the varifocal lens is motorised: zoom and focus are set from a browser or the recorder once the unit is on the ceiling.

That matters where you did not choose the mounting position. A large share of these replace something — an analogue dome or an early IP unit on a bracket fitted years ago, feeding a recorder that still runs. You inherit the position, and you will not know until you are up there whether its view is the one the client needs.

Where it earns its place on a site

Read the retrofit as two lists. What survives: the containment, usually, since trunking and ceiling voids are rarely in the way; the bracket, sometimes, if the fixing pattern matches; the cable, rarely as it is, since coax carries no data and an early Cat5e run may be badly terminated or short of a switch.

What does not survive is the expensive list. Channel licensing is the usual casualty: the recorder has physical ports, but the free channel you assumed is often already spoken for. The power method changes almost every time, because the old camera probably took a local low-voltage supply on its own pair. And the old field of view does not survive at all.

On a retrofit the only thing you can count on inheriting is the hole in the ceiling. That is the argument for a motorised lens over a cheaper fixed one. A fixed dome commits you to a framing decision made from the ground, on a position somebody else chose. The -IZ lets you mount it, come down, settle the view on a live image, then re-frame it next year when the shelving moves. If the position needs more than 2 MP, the DS-2CD1743G0-IZ is the 4 MP equivalent.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• Recorder capacity, not recorder ports. Confirm the existing NVR has a free and licensed channel and will take this camera’s stream at the retention the client expects. A retrofit that needs a bigger recorder is a different quotation.
• How this position gets powered. Establish whether the camera sits on a switch port or a local supply, and that the run can carry it. Do not assume the pair feeding the old camera is reusable.
• The bracket and the cable entry. Check the existing fixing pattern and how the cable enters the housing on that surface. Decide before ordering whether a surface, back-box or pendant accessory is needed.

Common questions on this model

Can I reuse the coax from the analogue camera this replaces?
Not as it stands — this is an IP camera and expects a network connection. The containment it runs through is usually reusable, and that is the part that saves the day.

The camera coming out was 2 MP as well — why pay for a motorised lens?
You are not repeating that camera’s view, you are choosing a new one on a position you did not pick. The motor lets you choose from the ground and change it later without booking access.

Will it go straight onto the recorder we already have?
