Hikvision 28 Port Gigabit Full Managed Switch DS-3E2528

Twenty-eight gigabit ports and a full management layer put the DS-3E2528 in the part of a network somebody administers, rather than the part merely wired. It is a Hikvision DS-3E2 series switch, fully managed: its ports can be separated, prioritised, watched and disabled by whoever holds the login. On a large or shared network that is capability you cannot do without.

It is also a commitment. Each of those abilities is something a person has to configure, document and still be contactable about later, which is the honest test to apply before it goes on a quotation.

Where it earns its place on a job

It belongs where traffic has to be kept apart and accounted for: a campus where the surveillance network must not see the office network, or a client whose IT team wants to disable a port without driving out. VLANs give the separation, port-level control enforces it, and monitoring narrows a fault down before an engineer is dispatched.

None of it happens on its own. Out of the crate it forwards on defaults, and defaults mean one flat network with no separation, no policy and no visibility — what an unmanaged unit gives you for less money and without a login. A managed switch left on factory settings is an unmanaged switch with a password nobody can find. The question before quoting one is not whether the network is big enough. It is: who is the named person who will administer this, and will they still be here in two years.

If that person sits in the client’s IT department, bring them into the conversation before the order, not after the delivery note: they will want the management addressing inside their own scheme, the VLAN plan to match what they run, and the credentials theirs from day one. If there is no such person, say so and specify from the simpler end of the switch range.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• The named administrator. Not a company or department but a person, who accepts that this switch is theirs to configure and hold the password for. If nobody will put their name to it, the managed specification is not justified.
• The addressing and VLAN plan. Agreed in writing with whoever owns the network before commissioning day, including which subnet the management interface sits on. Retrofitting one later is the expensive route.
• How access survives the handover. Where credentials are stored, who else can retrieve them, and whether a configuration backup is kept off the device. A switch that outlives the memory of its own password has quietly become an ordinary one.

Compatibility

It is a standards-based Ethernet switch, so cameras, recorders, access points and workstations connect to it whoever built them. Management is different: it is configured on the switch itself, not from a camera or recorder application, which is precisely why it needs an administrator and not only an installer.

Common questions on this model

We do not have IT staff. Should we still buy managed?
Usually not, unless you are buying the administration alongside it. With nobody owning the configuration you pay a managed price, run on defaults and gain a login that gets lost. The exception is a contracted IT provider retained to keep configuring it; that works. An unowned managed switch does not.

Can our installer configure it and hand it over?
Yes. Make the handover explicit: the commissioned configuration, a backup of it, the credentials, and a named recipient who signs for them. Skip it and the next change means a factory reset.
