Hikvision 8 MP Smart Hybrid Light Dome Network Camera DS-2CD1183G2-LIU
The top of Hikvision’s 1-Series dome range at 8 MP, with Smart Hybrid Light rather than infrared alone. Specify it where one dome must cover a wide scene you will later crop into, and check recorder decoding and retention before you commit the channels. Datasheet and project pricing on 16454.

Description
The DS-2CD1183G2-LIU is the resolution ceiling of Hikvision’s 1-Series dome range: 8 MP in a fixed dome housing with Smart Hybrid Light supplement lighting rather than infrared alone — that is what the LIU suffix tells you. Nothing sits above it in this family, so nobody reaches it by accident.
Specifying 8 MP is not a decision about a camera. It is a decision about the recorder, the drives, the switch and whoever sits in front of the monitor. Pixels are made at the camera and paid for everywhere else, and none of that appears on the camera’s line in the quote. It appears on the client’s second invoice.
Where it fits
Before you put 8 MP on any drawing, answer four questions. How long is the retention the client signed for — a heavier stream shortens it on the same drive, and retention is what they complain about. How many channels run at this resolution, not just this one. What is the recorder rated to decode, a smaller number than what it is rated to record. And does anyone view them all live, because a wall of sixteen 8 MP tiles loads the workstation, not the camera.
The cheapest part of an 8 MP job is the 8 MP camera. Everything the resolution obliges you to buy afterwards costs more than it did.
It earns its place on a wide, busy scene you will want to interrogate later: a showroom floor, a supermarket aisle head, a warehouse bay, a till line. One dome covers the width and the detail survives being cropped into weeks later, which is all that matters when an incident is reviewed. Over a corridor or a single door, where a lower-resolution camera already fills the frame, the extra pixels buy nothing and cost storage every hour. For those positions the 4 MP camera in the same Smart Hybrid Light dome family, the DS-2CD1143G2-LIU, is the honest specification.
Before you order — three things to confirm
- Recorder headroom, not channel count. Check incoming bandwidth ceiling and decoding capacity against the full camera list at the resolutions you intend to run.
- Storage against promised retention. Recalculate retention days for the whole system with these cameras in it. If it falls short, the fix is more drive, a lower stream setting or fewer 8 MP positions — decide before ordering.
- Lens variant and position. This dome is offered in more than one fixed focal length and the choice is not reversible on site, so confirm it against scene width and mounting height.

Compatibility
It drops into a Hikvision recorder and the standard management software without special handling. The real question is not whether the recorder accepts it — it will — but whether the recorder, the switch it hangs off and the uplink to the recording room have headroom for this stream alongside everything already there. On a shared data network, settle that with the switch owner first.
What’s in the box
Supplied as a single camera unit in Hikvision packaging. Contents vary by revision, so we confirm what ships with the current revision on the order. Mounting accessories, power supplies and storage media are quoted separately.
Common questions
My recorder supports 8 MP. Can I run sixteen of these on it?
Not necessarily. Supporting 8 MP per channel, recording sixteen such channels and decoding sixteen for live display are three separate ratings on one recorder. Check all three.
Will 8 MP fix a scene that looks poor at night?
No. Resolution and low-light performance are different problems. If the image fails after dark, the answer is lighting, mounting and exposure — more pixels on a badly lit scene produce a larger poor image.
Can I mix this with 2 MP and 4 MP cameras on one recorder?
Yes, and it is usually the right design. Put 8 MP only where the scene justifies it. Bandwidth and storage are one shared budget, and each 8 MP position spends a large share.
