Some rooms have no ceiling to recess a speaker into. The DS-QAZ0510G1 in white is a 10 W analogue pendant speaker, and it exists for exactly that situation: an atrium, an exposed-services warehouse or showroom, a restaurant with the ductwork on show, a mall walkway open to the floor above. Instead of sitting flush in a tile, it hangs from the structure on a cable at the height you choose.

That is not a compromise. Hanging the speaker brings it down to where people are, which in a space with a six-metre soffit is the difference between audible and merely present.

Where it earns its place on a job

In a tall space, a speaker fixed at structure level has to cover an enormous distance before the sound reaches anyone, and by then it has spread out and picked up the reflections of everything on the way. Bringing it down to a few metres above head height means each unit covers a sensible circle at a modest level, and the sound arrives before it has bounced off anything.

The pendant form is also honest about itself. In a room where the services are deliberately exposed, a hanging speaker reads as part of that language, while a bulky box bolted to a wall reads as an afterthought. Where the ceiling is a plain plasterboard grid, a flush ceiling speaker is the better-looking answer and we will say so.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• The suspension height and what carries it. The drop length is a design decision, not a default, and it has to be the same across the space or the installation looks careless. Confirm what the speaker hangs from, and that it is a structural fixing rather than a ceiling tile.
• The cable route down to it. The cable is visible. It should follow the same line as the suspension and be terminated tidily; a speaker on a neat drop with a cable looping across it undoes the effect entirely.
• Access for maintenance. Anything hanging over an open floor needs a way to be reached again. Agree at design stage whether that is a tower, a lift, or an evening closure.

Common questions on this model

How low should it hang?
Low enough to be near the people and high enough to be out of reach and out of sightlines. In practice that is a decision made with the architect or the client on site, and it wants to be the same everywhere in the room.

White or black?
Match the soffit, not the walls. Against exposed dark steel or a black-painted ceiling void the white unit stands out sharply; under a light soffit it disappears.

Can we mix pendants and ceiling speakers in one system?
