Hikvision 4K Fixed Dome Network Camera DS-2CD1183G0-I

The DS-2CD1183G0-I is the 8 MP member of Hikvision’s 1-series network dome range: a fixed-lens IP dome with built-in infrared, in a body meant to sit flat against a ceiling or a soffit. The word doing the most work in that sentence is fixed. Whatever field of view the lens gives you is the field of view you live with for the life of the installation, so on this model the site survey matters more than it does on anything varifocal — get the position wrong and the only remedy is a ladder and a new bracket.

It exists for one reason, and that reason is pixel density. From the same mounting point, a 4K dome puts roughly four times the pixels on a face as a 1080p dome does. That is the difference between footage that shows a man in a dark jacket and footage a client can put a name to. The resolution is not free, though, and pretending otherwise is how an installer ends up back on site three weeks later listening to a complaint about retention.

Where it earns its place on a site

Specify it where identification is the job, not where coverage is the job. A till or cash desk, a pharmacy counter, the goods-in door of a warehouse, a reception where everyone entering the building passes one choke point, a workshop bench where the eventual argument will be about whose hand touched what. In those positions the extra pixels become evidence, and evidence is what the client is actually paying for.

Where it does not earn its place: wide car parks, long open yards and general perimeter runs, where the subject is far enough away that 8 MP still resolves nothing useful and you have simply quadrupled the bitrate for a bigger picture of the same blur. A 4K camera pointed at nothing in particular is just an expensive way to fill a hard disk. On most sites the right answer is three or four of these on the positions that will end up in a report, and standard-resolution domes on everything else.

Before you order

• Recorder and storage. Confirm the NVR can accept an 8 MP stream on the channel you intend to use, and recalculate retention days at 4K rather than reusing the figure from a 2 MP job. Budget the disks before you quote, not after.
• Power and switch capacity. This is a network camera, so it needs a data run and a power method. Confirm with us whether the batch in stock is powered over Ethernet or by separate supply, and check the switch has headroom for the whole camera count, not just this one.
• Lens variant and mounting. The lens is fixed, so decide the focal length against the actual scene width and standoff distance before the order is placed, and confirm the ceiling, junction box or bracket you intend to use suits a dome of this size.
