The DS-2CD1327G3-LIUF/SL is Hikvision’s 1-Series turret in its ColorVu 3.0 generation, with the /SL suffix that puts a strobe light and an audible alarm on the camera body itself. It is a 2 MP network camera, the tier you quote twelve of for a shop, and everything you pay above a plain 1-Series turret sits in two places: colour when the lights are off, and the ability to make noise and light at whoever set it off.

That points at retail, and it is worth being honest about why. Inside a lit shop during trading hours every camera on the ceiling is a colour camera. What you are buying is the other half of the day — the shuttered floor at two in the morning, the stockroom with one dim bulb, the yard door nobody has ever lit properly.

Where it earns its place on a site

In those hours the difference is not sharpness, it is the category of information. A monochrome night frame tells you a person took something. A colour frame tells you he was in a red hoodie and grey trainers — and that second sentence is what a police report and a loss-prevention investigation are actually built on.

So the sensible build is not twelve of these. It is these where a description has to survive the night — till points, the aisle ends holding small high-value stock, the back door — with ordinary turrets covering what only has to prove something moved. The /SL strobe and alarm earn their keep at the back door, where the point is to make an opportunist leave before he is inside. Before you order — three things to confirm

• Till points — the angle, not the camera. ColorVu cannot fix geometry. A turret dropped straight above a counter gives a colour photograph of the top of a head. Set it off to the customer side, looking back at face height.
• Shelf aisles — the lens is decided at the order, not on the ladder. The focal option is fixed at purchase, so an aisle-length view and a till-close view are different orders of the same model code. Measure the aisle one camera must cover and call 16454 with the distance.
• Back door — someone has to configure the deterrence. /SL is a capability, not a default behaviour. The strobe and alarm fire on a rule someone sets: a zone, a schedule so it does not trigger on staff during a delivery, and a definition of what counts as an event.

Common questions on this model

Will it give colour in an unlit stockroom, or does it need ambient light?
ColorVu 3.0 is the reason to choose this over an IR-only turret, and the /SL strobe is a visible light rather than infrared. What it does at your light level is a datasheet question — describe the room on 16454.

Does the strobe and alarm work out of the box?
No, and nobody should want it to. The hardware is there; the rule that fires it is configured. Left alone it is simply a camera. Set up badly it flashes at staff cashing up.

Can I fit these only at the till and back door and use cheaper turrets down the aisles?
Yes, and on a shop that is usually right. Spend the ColorVu and /SL budget where a colour description or an active deterrent changes the outcome.
