The DS-2CD1323G2-LIU is a 2 MP fixed turret from Hikvision’s 1-Series with Smart Hybrid Light — the camera that goes under an eave and points at a gate, a loading door or a yard. The reason it keeps getting specified is not the sensor. It is the housing.

A turret puts the lens and the supplement light in the open air, on a ball joint, with no bubble in front of either. A dome fires its own light through a curved cover millimetres from the lens; add a dust film, a fingerprint, or two Egyptian summers of UV yellowing, and that light comes back as haze. A turret has nothing to bounce off, and no bubble to fog or scratch.

Where it earns its place on a site

Eaves, soffits, shopfront fascias, warehouse lintels, villa corners — anywhere the camera sits above head height and looks down and out. The ball joint is the practical part: loosen one collar, set pan, tilt and roll in one movement, lock it. No bubble to reseat, no image left rotated because the housing fought you.

Then the light. Smart Hybrid Light gives infrared for a discreet monochrome image, or white light where the scene needs colour — at a gate barrier or a delivery bay, where you want the colour of the van and not just that a shape moved. Out in the open, it lights the scene rather than the inside of a cover.

A dome is still right in two places: reach-height positions — corridors, lift lobbies, stairwells, car park columns — where an exposed ball joint can be pushed out of aim by hand, and positions where the aim should stay hidden, since a tinted dome tells nobody which way it looks and a turret announces it. Buy a turret for what it does to the light and a dome for what it does to people.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• Lens variant: this is a fixed-lens camera and the 1-Series turrets are sold in more than one focal length. The lens is chosen at the order, not on site — getting it wrong is a return, not an adjustment.
• Mount and cable path: confirm whether each position takes the base straight onto the soffit with the cable through the surface, or needs a junction box, pole or corner adapter — none of those is assumed in the carton.
• White light policy: decide before commissioning whether white light stays on, triggers on event, or stays off. On a residential boundary it generates complaints; at a gate it is why you bought the camera.

Common questions on this model

Can I replace an existing dome with this on the same fixing holes?
Usually not directly. Turret and dome bases differ in diameter and hole pattern, so plan on a new fixing or an adapter plate. Cable entry differs too, which matters more than the holes when the cable drops out of a soffit.

Does the white light stay on permanently?
Only if you set it that way. Smart Hybrid Light can be left in infrared and brought to white light on an event — the usual setting on residential boundaries. It is a commissioning choice, not fixed behaviour.

Is a turret easier to re-aim or vandalise than a dome?
At height, no — nobody reaches it. Within arm’s reach, yes: the ball joint can be pushed by hand and the lens is exposed. That is the honest limit of the form factor.
