The DS-2CD3666G2T-IZS is a 6 MP AcuSense bullet from Hikvision’s 3-Series IP range, and the letter that matters is the Z: the varifocal lens is motorised, so the field of view is set once the bracket is up, not fixed weeks earlier on a quotation. The S suffix carries the usual audio and alarm terminals.

That suits the position nobody describes accurately over the phone — a yard, a gate approach, a loading bay, a staff car park. The client knows roughly what he wants watched, and nothing about how tightly.

Where it earns its place on a site

Detect, recognise and identify are three separate jobs, and a survey that treats them as one is why finished systems disappoint their owners. Detection is knowing something is there: a person has crossed the yard. Recognition is knowing it was one of your own drivers, or the same van as last Tuesday, because you already know that vehicle. Identification is proving to a stranger — an insurer, a court — that this is the individual and not merely somebody of the same build.

Those three jobs want three different lens settings from the same camera in the same bracket. A view wide enough to notice everyone entering a yard spreads its pixels across the whole yard, so each person gets a small share. A view tight enough to name a face at the gate has thrown most of the yard away to do it. A client who says “I want to see faces” is rarely describing the camera he is pointing at, but a second, tighter position nearer a pinch point where everyone passes at a known distance.

The motorised lens is not an installation convenience; it moves the detect-or-identify argument out of the quotation, where it is a guess, into the commissioning visit, where the client is standing beside you looking at the live image. You zoom, he says too tight or not tight enough, and it is settled with a witness. Where framing is genuinely known at survey, a fixed-lens bullet such as the DS-2CD3T56G2-4IS is the honest, cheaper answer.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• The job, per position. Write detect, recognise or identify against every position on the schedule, agreed with the client before ordering. That one word governs mounting height, distance to the target and whether one camera suffices.
• Lens variant. Motorised varifocal cameras are commonly offered in more than one focal range, and the range you order sets the outer limits of what you can settle on the day. The datasheet carries the angles.
• The audio and alarm tail. The S means extra terminals to route, protect and possibly leave unused. Confirm the junction box has room, and that the recorder can accept an alarm input.

Compatibility

It records to Hikvision NVRs and is managed through the usual Hikvision desktop and mobile clients. AcuSense classification happens inside the camera, so events reach the recorder already sorted. Third-party platforms take the stream over ONVIF, but lens control, analytics and alarm terminals are what a mixed system loses first.

Common questions on this model

Can one camera cover a whole yard and still identify a face at the gate?
Not at one lens setting. Set this one wide for detection across the yard, then a second camera on the gate itself, set tight, for identification.

Does the motorised lens mean I can re-aim it remotely later?
It changes zoom and focus, not where the camera points. Panning still means somebody at the bracket, so choose the bracket for the widest view you might want.

Will AcuSense stop the false alarms we get on our current cameras?
It narrows events to human and vehicle targets, clearing out most of the moving-vegetation and shadow triggers that bury an event log. It does not replace sensible detection zones.
