The DS-2CD3T86G2-4IS is an 8 MP fixed-lens bullet from Hikvision’s 3-Series, and the word that decides how you install it is not “8 MP” but “fixed”. You set the frame once, on the ladder, and then live with it. Which is fine, provided you spend the pixels as intended: aim at the whole yard rather than the gate, and crop into the recording later to find the gate.

That inverts the habit formed on 2 MP kit, where you framed tight because there was nothing spare to crop into. At 8 MP over an open area you frame the whole scene and zoom in digitally after the event, so one camera on a loading apron or a car park row covers ground that would otherwise take two or three. Where it earns its place on a site

Compound yards, loading aprons, car parks, fence lines — open ground no single tight shot covers. Put it this way: buy this camera for the scene you cannot afford to miss, not for the detail you already know you want, because if you already know where to look, a cheaper camera pointed there will beat it. But the wide frame costs you twice. One lens means one exposure and one focus for the whole scene, so a bright sky at one end darkens the shaded end you care about. And digital zoom into a recording is limited by what the recorder wrote, not by the sensor: crop far enough into an under-bitrated stream and you get compression blocks, not a number plate. Before you order — three things to confirm

• Recording bitrate — the crop-later method only works if the stream is written at a bitrate that survives it. Check what the NVR allocates per channel and how much retention that leaves.
• Dynamic range of the scene — walk the position at the worst hour. If one end of the frame sits in full sun while the other is in deep shade, move the camera, split the area in two, or accept that one end suffers.
• The frame is permanent — the angle of view is set by the lens variant supplied and where you mount it. Agree mounting height and coverage at survey, and confirm the variant on the order.

Common questions on this model

Can I zoom into a recording the way I zoom into the live view?
Yes, but the ceiling differs. Playback holds only what the recorder wrote, so a low bitrate hits compression artefacts long before the crop reaches the sensor’s limit.

Will one of these really replace three cameras along a car park row?
Often, for identifying vehicles and movement across the row. It will not match three dedicated cameras where lighting varies sharply along it, since each of those gets its own exposure.

Which lens variant should we order for a yard?
