Hikvision 4 MP 25× Network IR Speed Dome DS-2DE4425IW-DE

A speed dome is the only camera on a site that can be pointing the wrong way when something happens. The DS-2DE4425IW-DE is Hikvision’s 4 MP network IR speed dome with a 25× optical zoom block: one head on a motorised pan-and-tilt mount that can sweep a wide yard, then pull in tight enough to work on detail at the far end of it. That reach is the whole reason to buy one, and it is also the reason it is never the right camera to buy on its own.

Specify it as the long-reach camera in a scheme that already has fixed cameras covering the gates, doors and lanes that must be recorded every second of the day. The dome adds the ability to go and look — at the back of the compound, at a vehicle that should not be there, at a stack of material at the far end of the yard. It also needs something driving it: a guard with a keyboard or client software, or presets, patrol tours and event links set up properly at commissioning. Left on its own with no configuration and nobody watching, a PTZ is an expensive weather vane.

Where it earns its place on a site

The 25× zoom is the specification that decides the application. It pays for itself over large open ground where a fixed lens is caught between two bad options — wide enough to cover the area but too wide to identify anyone, or tight enough to identify but blind to nine tenths of the site. Contractor yards, plant and equipment compounds, logistics depots, large surface car parks, quarries and open industrial land are the natural fit, along with long approach roads into gated compounds and factory perimeters where the fence line runs further than any fixed camera can usefully see.

It is a weaker choice indoors, in corridors, in small shops and anywhere the furthest point of interest is twenty metres away — a fixed 4 MP camera will do that job for less money and with nothing to go wrong mechanically. In a manned scheme, one speed dome plus a competent operator often adds more than four extra fixed cameras. In an unmanned scheme with no presets and no rules configured, it usually adds less than one.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• Power and the cable run. A motorised dome with IR draws considerably more than a fixed camera, and the peak draw is when the motors and the IR are working together. Confirm the power method and budget for this exact model against the datasheet before assuming the existing switch port and cable length will carry it.
• Mount, bracket and the surface it lands on. Wall, pendant, corner or pole mounting hardware and the junction box are ordered separately on domes of this class. Confirm which you need, and confirm the pole or parapet is stiff enough — a long zoom on a mount that moves in the wind produces unusable images at full magnification.
• The recorder and who drives the camera. Confirm your NVR or VMS supports PTZ control on a network channel, has a free channel and the bandwidth headroom, and agree with the client at quotation stage who is going to operate it or what presets and tours will be programmed.

Common questions on this model

Can this replace several fixed cameras?
Only where the site is manned. One dome covers a large area in sequence, not simultaneously, so anything that must be recorded continuously still needs a fixed camera pointed at it. Use the dome for reach and investigation, not for the evidence positions.

How far can it identify a person or a plate?
That depends on the focal length range, the mounting height and the light available, and it is not something to guess at from the zoom figure alone. Send us the site distances on 16454 and we will work it against the datasheet before you commit.

Will it run on our existing PoE switch?
Check before ordering. A PTZ of this class has a materially higher power budget than the fixed cameras already on the switch. We will confirm the requirement for this model and tell you whether you need a higher-class port or a separate supply.
