The DS-3E0326P-E/M is the twenty-four port member of Hikvision’s DS-3E0 unmanaged long-range PoE family: twenty-four Fast Ethernet PoE ports in one box, with a long-range mode for the runs that need it. It is the size chosen when a site will be served from one point, not in clusters.

That is a bigger decision than the port count makes it look. Almost nobody buys twenty-four ports because they have twenty-four cameras — they buy them because one room has been chosen as the place where everything terminates.

Where it earns its place on a job

Commit to a single aggregation point and the cabling becomes a star. Every camera’s cable has to reach that one room by a route that exists and can be pulled, and the runs from the far corners are the longest they will ever be. The copper is the sum of twenty-four radial legs rather than a few short ones plus a spine: a rounding error on a compact site, the largest line on the materials list for a long building.

The alternative deserves an honest look first. Two smaller switches nearer the cameras, each collecting a cluster and carrying one link back, usually means less cable, shorter runs, and a fault that takes out half the site rather than all of it. Twenty-four ports is a statement about the building, not the camera count. The single unit is genuinely right when a comms room already exists where the cabling wants to go, the far runs sit comfortably inside range, and the client wants one thing to maintain — good reasons that still deserve a tape measure.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• The cable metres, both ways. Total the real route length for one central switch and for two clustered switches with a link back, along real pull routes, not straight lines. Decide from those numbers, not the port count.
• The uplink path. Confirm how the aggregate traffic and any second switch get back to the recorder. Uplink count and type is a datasheet question; answer it before drawing the topology.
• The cabinet at that point. A twenty-four port unit needs mounting space and somewhere for the heat to go, in a rack that is often already full. Check depth, free U and airflow first.

Compatibility

An unmanaged switch is transport: PoE cameras plug in and appear on the same network as the recorder, with nothing to configure on the switch itself. That suits Hikvision recorders and other manufacturers’ IP devices equally; per-camera power support is a datasheet question.

Common questions on this model

One 24-port switch or two 16-port switches?
There is no default answer, which is why it comes down to measurement. Count the route metres to one central point, then to two cluster points plus the link back. If the figures are close, take the single switch and the simpler maintenance. If the central figure is much larger, two switches usually cost less overall.

We already have a switch in the comms room. Can this be phased in?
Yes, and it is a common way to buy one. New cameras land here, the existing ports keep serving what is on them, and the two run side by side until the older unit is retired.

Does unmanaged become a limitation at twenty-four ports?
For a camera network feeding recorders on the same subnet, generally not — there is nothing to configure and nothing to misconfigure. It matters when camera traffic has to be separated from other building systems, which is a decision to take before the switch is chosen.
