Where it earns its place on a job

It belongs on a five or six camera site, and the reason is the ports you leave unused. Fill all eight on handover day and the network has nowhere to go: when the client adds a doorbell camera or opens a second gate, you are choosing between daisy-chaining a second switch off a port you did not have spare and replacing a switch that works. Experienced installers decide before ordering how many ports stay empty and write that number into the specification rather than treating it as slack. Buy the port count the site will have in two years, not the one it has on handover day.

Do not gold-plate either. A large switch on a villa that will still have five cameras in five years is money that could have bought a better camera at the gate, where it would have changed the footage. This is a judgement about the direction the site is travelling, which makes it a question for the client rather than a rule — and if the answer is ten or twelve endpoints, quote for that now and let the 16-port DS-3E1518P-EI do it in one box.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• The client’s two-year plan. Ask outright, in those words: what is planned here over the next two years? A phase two, an extension, a second building, a gate where there is now a wall. One phone call decides which switch goes on the quotation.
• Endpoints, not cameras. Count everything that lands on this switch — a door station, a network speaker, an access point, a wired drop at the desk. Sites rarely outgrow a switch on cameras alone.
• The return path. Confirm from the datasheet for the revision you are buying how the link back to the recorder is provided. On an eight-port switch, one port decides whether the job fits.

Common questions on this model

Can I add a second switch later to get more ports?
Yes, and know the cost first. Linking the two uses a port on each, so eight plus eight is not sixteen usable ports — it is closer to fourteen. Everything on the second switch then shares that single cable between them instead of having its own path back to the recorder. A fair repair for a grown site; a poor plan to build in.

We only have six cameras — is eight ports enough?
Today, yes. The useful question is what the site looks like in two years. Six cameras plus the return path leaves one spare — one addition and nothing more. If the client mentions an extension or a second entrance, treat six cameras as nine.

How many ports should I leave spare?
One as a minimum on a domestic job, two where anything is planned. A spare port costs almost nothing at order time; the same headroom bought later means a second box in the cabinet or a swap on a live system.
