Hikvision 8-Channel AcuSense NVR, No PoE, 2 HDD Bays DS-7608NXI-K2

The DS-7608NXI-K2 records eight IP cameras and powers none of them. There is no /P in the model code, so there are no PoE ports on the back panel: every camera is fed from a separate PoE switch that has to appear on the quote, fit in the cabinet and be counted in the power budget.

The NXI in the middle is the AcuSense line, so classification happens in the recorder itself — it separates people and vehicles from the rest of the movement in the frame, which turns searching a week of footage into a two-minute job. K2 means two HDD bays, which is where the retention conversation stops being theoretical and turns into arithmetic you do before the order, not after.

Where it earns its place on a job

This is the recorder for a site that already has a network. Structured cabling, a comms cabinet, a PoE switch already feeding access points and IP phones — in that building the no-PoE variant is the right call, because you are not paying twice for switching you already own, and because the switch a competent integrator specified will out-perform eight ports bolted to the back of a recorder.

Where it is wrong is the eight-camera villa with no rack and no switch. There the /8P version would have saved a switch, a power supply, a set of patch leads and half a day of labour, and the client would never have noticed the difference. A no-PoE NVR is not a cheaper NVR — it is a recorder that assumes somebody else has already done the hard part of the cabling.

Two bays also sets a ceiling. Retention is a commercial requirement before it is a technical one: an insurer or a landlord names a number of days, and that number across eight channels decides the drives you buy. Hard drives are not included — they are quoted separately, sized to the retention the site has to meet, and should be surveillance-rated rather than whatever desktop disk is on the shelf.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• The PoE switch is its own line on the quote. Count the camera ports, add an uplink, and check the switch’s power budget against the cameras you are actually fitting — not just the port count. Miss it and the job is short a switch and a power supply.
• Drive capacity against real retention. Two bays, drives sold separately. Tell us the channel count, the days you must keep and the resolution you will run, and we will size the pair with you before the order goes out.
• Whether your cameras support the AcuSense events you plan to act on. The recorder classifies person and vehicle, but what you can trigger, filter and search end to end depends on the camera models in the bill of materials.

Common questions on this model

Does this recorder power my cameras?
No. There is no /P in DS-7608NXI-K2, so there is no built-in PoE. Each camera takes power from a separate PoE switch or injector, priced alongside the recorder.

Can I use it if my cameras are not AcuSense models?
Yes — it records them as normal IP channels. What varies is which smart events work end to end, so confirm the camera models before promising a client person and vehicle filtering.

How many days of recording will I get?
That depends on the drives you fit, the channel count and the bitrate you configure — two bays, no drives supplied. Give us the retention target on 16454 and we will size them with you.
