Hikvision 16-Channel 4K NVR with 16 PoE Ports DS-7616NI-Q2/16P

The DS-7616NI-Q2/16P is the sixteen-port member of Hikvision’s Q-series recorder line: sixteen camera channels, sixteen PoE ports on the rear panel so every camera takes power and data down one cable, two drive bays, and 4K recording. On a sixteen-camera job it takes a separate PoE switch, its power supply and its place in the cabinet out of the bill of materials — normally the reason it is specified over a switch-fed recorder.

The /16P half of the code saves money on installation day. The Q2 half decides whether the client is still happy six weeks later, because two bays is all the site’s footage has to live on — and that half is what gets skipped at quotation stage.

Where it earns its place on a job

This is the recorder for a self-contained sixteen-camera site with one cabinet and one cable route: a retail floor, a workshop, a small warehouse, a single office storey. Everything terminates in one place, one unit is powered, and no second box in the rack can quietly drop half the cameras when it fails.

Two bays behind sixteen channels is the least forgiving arithmetic in the Q-series. How long a recorder keeps footage is not a property of the recorder: it is the product of how many channels are actually recording, the resolution and frame rate each is set to, how efficiently the stream is compressed, and how much of the day there is movement in front of the lens. Change any one and the retention window moves. What does not change is the space — two drives. So the same pair of drives that gives an eight-channel recorder a comfortable window gives this one far less per camera, absorbing twice the streams into the same space. Where a site genuinely needs only eight cameras, the DS-7608NI-Q2/8P puts the same two bays against half the load. Drives are quoted separately for that reason: size them to the retention the client has contracted for, not to whatever fits the budget on the day.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• Retention, in writing. Agree the retention period in writing before sizing the drives. Clients rarely find out they disagree with you about retention until there has been an incident and the footage has already rolled over — by then it is your problem, not theirs.
• Sixteen is a ceiling, not a target. If the design already lists sixteen cameras, a phase two camera means an external switch and a larger recorder. Confirm the final count, including whatever the client is likely to add later.
• Camera power and cable runs. Check your chosen cameras against the recorder’s per-port supply and the run lengths on site; both are on the datasheet, so ask us rather than assume.

Common questions on this model

Can I run sixteen cameras from it without a separate PoE switch?
That is what the /16P suffix means: sixteen powered ports, one cable per camera. Confirm what your cameras draw against the datasheet first.

Will two drives last as long here as in the eight-channel model?
No. Same bays, twice the streams. Set the retention period first, then size the drives to it.

What happens when the client asks for a seventeenth camera?
The ports are full and there is no spare channel, so it means a larger recorder. Plan the channel count around the site as it will be next year, not as it is today.
