The DS-9664NI-M8 is Hikvision’s 64-channel M Series recorder with eight hard drive bays, built to sit in a rack and record an entire site rather than a single entrance. It is 8K-capable and takes all 64 channels over the network — there is no PoE built into this chassis, so the cameras are fed from separate PoE switches you specify alongside it.

That detail changes how the job is quoted. On a small unit with /P in the code, the switching is invisible because it sits inside the box. At 64 channels it is infrastructure: switches, uplinks, cable runs, a UPS and somewhere cool for it.

Where it earns its place on a job

This is the recorder you reach for when the camera count passes what a 32-channel unit can carry. A residential compound with perimeter, gates and basements. A factory covering production lines and loading bays. A hotel, a warehouse, a school campus. Anywhere the site has a real network already and someone whose job includes looking after it.

Eight bays is the other half of the story. Sixty-four channels generate a lot of data every day, and with eight drives you are choosing between raw capacity and redundancy — filling all eight for maximum retention, or giving up capacity to survive a drive failure without losing footage. That is a decision for quote stage, not the week after a drive dies. Hard drives are not supplied with the unit; we quote them separately and size them to the retention the client actually needs.

A 64-channel recorder is not a bigger 16-channel recorder — it is IT equipment that happens to record video, and it should be sold to someone who will administer it.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• Retention against total drive capacity. Ask how many days of footage the client expects to go back through, then work out what that requires across all 64 channels at the resolutions and frame rates you plan to use. Eight bays gives you room, but “eight bays” is not an answer to “how many days?” — the drive sizing is.
• PoE switching is a separate line. There is no /P in DS-9664NI-M8 and no camera ports on the unit. Every camera needs a port on a PoE switch with enough power budget, plus uplinks back to the recorder. Price the switches, the cable runs and the cabinet before the client sees a number.
• How many channels are 4K or 8K. A system where most cameras are 2 MP behaves very differently from one loaded with 4K and 8K units. Incoming bandwidth and decoding load both depend on that mix — check it against the manufacturer’s published figures before you commit to a camera list.

Does it power the cameras?
No. There is no /P in the model code and no PoE ports on the unit. All 64 cameras are powered from external PoE switches, quoted as part of the same job.

How many days of recording will I get?

No. Many sites start with the capacity they need today and add drives later. Agree the plan up front, though, so the redundancy approach is not rebuilt after the system is live.
