Which raises the question to settle before the order goes in, and it is an engineering one rather than commercial. Sixty-four channels can arrive on this unit, or be split across two or three smaller recorders. One chassis is cheaper per channel, simpler to license and far easier to administer. It is also one power supply, one motherboard and a whole building’s evidence behind a single point of failure.

Where it fits

Consolidation is right more often than installers expect. One building, one comms room, a client holding a maintenance contract, someone who reads alerts and acts on them: put all 64 channels here and use the sixteen bays for long retention and drive redundancy at once, which a smaller chassis cannot do. This is where you stop trading capacity against protection.

Distribution wins elsewhere. Three buildings joined by one fibre run — a recorder per building keeps recording when that link drops. A comms room that floods in winter or bakes through August. A tenant who will not telephone anyone until something has already gone wrong, and so learns of the fault at the moment they need the footage. On those jobs two DS-9664NI-M8 units lose a third of the estate to a failure, not all of it.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• Who notices a failure, and how they are told. Consolidating a site onto one recorder is only safe if somebody finds out the same day a drive drops out or recording halts. Agree at quote stage who that person is, which alerts reach them and by what route — email, mobile app, or a platform your team already watches. If nobody is watching, distribute the channels instead.
• The drive plan across all sixteen bays. Decide before delivery how the bays are populated and which redundancy scheme runs on them; changing that later means taking the site off recording. Drives are not supplied — send the camera list and retention target and we will size them.
• Power, cooling and the cabinet. A chassis carrying sixteen drives needs a rack with real airflow, room to service it, and a UPS sized for the recorder and the switches feeding it. Confirm the comms room can host it in August, not just on survey day.
