The DS-K1T323MBFWX-E1 is a Value-series face access terminal from Hikvision: the unit that mounts beside a door, reads a face, and decides whether the lock releases. On a single-door job that sentence is the whole specification. On a five-door job it is only the first sentence.

Most access control quotes in Egypt are really a quantity of terminals — two at the entrance, one at the loading bay. That is arithmetic, not design, and it skips the question that decides year two: where does the user list live?

Where it fits

A standalone terminal holds its own users: you enrol a face at the door, on the door, and the record stays on that device. For one door — a clinic, a small office, a workshop of fourteen — that is genuinely fine. Nothing to host, nothing to license, nothing to back up.

Multiply it and the arithmetic turns. Five terminals holding their own lists are five separate systems that happen to share a brand. A new hire is enrolled five times, in person, at five doors. A leaver is deleted five times, and the one you miss is the one that matters. No report covers the whole site: the loading bay knows only about the loading bay.

Standalone terminals do not break as you add doors — they keep working perfectly, independently, in five directions at once, and that is precisely the failure.

The threshold arrives earlier than clients expect: around the third or fourth door, driven less by door count than by staff turnover and who inherits the administration. When someone is hired on a Sunday and must be through the gate on Monday, a managed platform takes one entry; standalone, somebody drives to every door.

The expensive part of getting this wrong is not the hardware — the same terminal usually serves either way — it is the re-enrolment. Migrating later means walking every employee back to a door and capturing their face again, in working hours, with a queue behind them. Design against the door count in two years, not today’s drawing; past a couple of doors, budget the management layer from the wider access control range at the same time.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• Doors in two years. Not the doors on the current drawing. One or two, buy the terminal and stop. Four or more, this is the first piece of a system and the platform belongs in the same order.
• Who owns the user list. Name the person who adds a joiner and removes a leaver, and ask whether they can be at each door. That answer decides whether standalone works here.
• Door hardware and position. Confirm the lock type, how it is powered and released, the exit arrangement and whether the position is sheltered — all against the datasheet.

Compatibility

Hikvision terminals are built to be administered from Hikvision’s own access control software, not device by device. Support depends on the platform and firmware version, so where a management server already runs, confirm this model code against it.

Common questions

We have one door now and probably four next year. Should we buy differently?
Buy the same terminal, but settle the management approach now. The hardware rarely changes; the administration model does, and deferring that is what forces the re-enrolment day.

Can several of these share one user list between themselves without a server?
Do not assume so. Peer synchronisation between standalone terminals is not something to design around. Confirm what this model supports on the datasheet; if the site needs one source of truth, plan for a platform.

What happens on the day we move to central management?
Every enrolled person is captured again: face templates do not lift cleanly from one system onto another. Budget a working day of queueing.
