Standalone terminals do not break as you add doors — they keep working perfectly, independently, in five directions at once, and that is precisely the failure.

The threshold arrives earlier than clients expect: around the third or fourth door, driven less by door count than by staff turnover and who inherits the administration. When someone is hired on a Sunday and must be through the gate on Monday, a managed platform takes one entry; standalone, somebody drives to every door.

The expensive part of getting this wrong is not the hardware — the same terminal usually serves either way — it is the re-enrolment. Migrating later means walking every employee back to a door and capturing their face again, in working hours, with a queue behind them. Design against the door count in two years, not today’s drawing; past a couple of doors, budget the management layer from the wider access control range at the same time.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• Doors in two years. Not the doors on the current drawing. One or two, buy the terminal and stop. Four or more, this is the first piece of a system and the platform belongs in the same order.
• Who owns the user list. Name the person who adds a joiner and removes a leaver, and ask whether they can be at each door. That answer decides whether standalone works here.
• Door hardware and position. Confirm the lock type, how it is powered and released, the exit arrangement and whether the position is sheltered — all against the datasheet.
