Hikvision Video Intercom Kit DS-KIS613-S

The DS-KIS613-S is a Hikvision video intercom kit whose two halves live very different lives. The indoor station sits in a hallway. The door station goes on an outside wall, at a gate or a lobby entrance, and the small camera in it is the only part of the system anyone ever judges.

Somebody presses the call button, a face appears on a screen indoors, and a resident who is half asleep has two seconds to decide one thing: open, or do not open. The whole decision rests on that face, and that face is lit by whatever happens to be at the entrance — which was lit for the look of the doorway, not for a camera two metres away.

Where it earns its place on a job

The right kit for a single entrance — a villa gate, a flat door, a small office front. Specifying it is easy. Siting it decides whether the client is still happy in six months, and it is usually settled carelessly, because the door station goes where the chase wants it rather than where the light is.

Three situations account for most complaints. A station facing west takes the low afternoon sun straight into the lens, so from about four o’clock every caller is a black silhouette — exactly the hours deliveries arrive. A station under a bright soffit light above head height is worse than no light: it lights the top of a head and leaves the eyes and mouth dark. A station in a narrow lightwell facing a white wall is fine at noon, when the wall bounces light back, and useless at dusk once it has gone grey.

The fixes are unglamorous and they work. Mount the station so the visitor is lit from the front, not from behind or overhead. If nothing lights the caller’s face, add one small lamp at face height — a modest light in the right place beats a powerful one in the wrong place. Never aim the lens into the brightest thing in the scene. Tell the client early: “the camera is bad” is really “the entrance was never lit for a camera”.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• Which way it faces. Get the direction the proposed position faces and what the afternoon sun does to it. A west-facing entrance needs the station angled off-axis, shaded, or moved to a return wall.
• What lights the face. Entrance lighting is usually overhead and too high. Check whether anything lights a caller from the front, and price a small lamp into the quote if not.
• A dusk check before first fix. Stand where the visitor will stand, at the real entrance, at dusk, and look at the picture before the back box goes into the wall.

Common questions on this model

Our gate faces west. Is that a problem?
It is the commonest reason a client calls the camera poor: from mid-afternoon the caller stands between the lens and the sun. Angle the station off the sun’s path, use a return wall, or add front lighting.

There is already a light above the door. Is that enough?
Usually not. A light above head height lights hair and shoulders and shadows the face. A small lamp at face height, slightly to one side, changes the picture completely.

Can we fix the position after the wall is finished?
You can, but it costs money: the back box is effectively permanent once the entrance is tiled or rendered. Settle it at first fix.
