Retention is not something you discover after the recorder is installed; it is the number that chooses the recorder. The question that produces it is easy: how far back do you need to go? Clients answer in a sentence — a week, a fortnight, whatever the insurer wrote down — and they are almost never asked. If the answer runs longer than one disk will carry, the two-bay DS-7608NXI-K2 keeps the same eight channels and doubles the disk count.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• How far back the client needs to go. Get a number of days, in writing, before you choose the recorder. It is the cheapest question on the job and the one that decides whether a single bay is enough.
• The stream settings you intend to run. Resolution, frame rate and codec across eight channels are what consume the disk. Agree them against the camera list first — a system signed off at one setting and commissioned at another produces a retention figure nobody promised.
• The disk, specified with the order. Use a surveillance-rated drive, and confirm the maximum capacity this model accepts against the datasheet rather than assuming it.

How long will it actually record for?

Is eight cameras on one disk a mistake?
