Sixteen channels is the size at which a camera system stops being something anyone actually watches. The DS-7616NXI-K2 is Hikvision’s K Series AcuSense recorder for that kind of site: sixteen IP channels, 4K, two drive bays, 1U. That is arithmetic, not a criticism. A four-camera shop has an owner who glances at a phone between customers. Before you order — three things to confirm

• Who reviews footage, and how they find a time. Agree who pulls clips, and make sure the recorder and every camera hold the same accurate time from day one. A report arrives as “around half three on Tuesday”, which is useless if the timestamps drift.
• Where the unit lives, and who can reach it. The 1U chassis suits a rack or a shelf, but settle now whether it sits in a locked, ventilated cupboard and who holds the key. If the weekly check means fetching a key from another building, it stops happening.
• Who owns the health check. Put one named person on drive status, channel status and recording state on a set day each week, and agree in writing where fault notifications go. Two bays also means a handover decision about how both are used.

Somebody reports an incident from last Tuesday afternoon — how do we find it?
Work backwards from the report, not forwards through the footage. Take the rough time and place, open the one or two channels covering it rather than all sixteen, and search that window instead of scrubbing playback. Camera names and an accurate clock turn a vague report into a two-minute search. Export the clip straight away.

Nobody watches the screens here. Is a sixteen-channel recorder still worth buying?
Yes, but buy it as a recording and retrieval system, not a viewing system. Its value does not depend on anyone watching live; it depends on the recording never quietly stopping.

Does it really matter what we call the cameras?
More than anything else you decide at commissioning. “Camera 11” means nothing to a duty manager at two in the morning; “Loading bay north” means everything. Use the client’s own words on the recorder and on the site plan.
