Four channels is not a limitation on this recorder — it is the specification. The DS-7604NI-Q1/4P is Hikvision’s small-job NVR: a two-bedroom flat, a pharmacy, a dental clinic, a corner shop with a till, a back door and a storeroom. The part that matters commercially is the /4P suffix. Those four PoE ports feed the cameras directly from the recorder, so a four-camera job needs no injectors, no separate PoE switch and no second power run to the ceiling — one cable per camera, terminated at the box.

On a job this size the recorder is not the interesting part of the quote; it is the part that quietly removes two line items and half a day of first-fix from the rest of it.

Where it earns its place on a job

Specify it where the camera count is genuinely settled and small. Residential and single-unit retail are its natural home: the client knows where the four cameras go, nobody is talking about phase two, and the whole system lives in one cupboard. In that scenario the Q series is the correct commercial answer.

Where it goes wrong is on sites that grow. A four-channel NVR has no headroom at all: the fifth camera does not mean a licence, it means a new recorder and a re-commission. If the client is a workshop that has already extended once, quote the eight-channel unit and let the spare ports sit idle for a year. The cheapest recorder on the job is the one you do not have to go back and replace.

Before you order

• Confirm the channel count is final. Four is four. Walk the site with the client and count positions including the ones they have not asked for yet — if the honest number is five, this is the wrong box.
• Check the total PoE budget, not just the port count. Four ports does not mean four of anything. IR bullets, PTZ heads and units with heaters draw very differently, and the recorder has a fixed total budget across the four ports. Send us the camera models and we will confirm the load against the datasheet before you commit.
• Match the drive to the retention the client actually wants. Bay count, maximum supported capacity and incoming bandwidth set the ceiling on how many days of four high-resolution streams you can hold. Common questions on this model

Can I add a fifth camera later?
Not to this unit. Four channels is a hard limit. If expansion is even a possibility, move up to an eight-channel recorder now — it is far cheaper than replacing the recorder and re-commissioning the system in a year.

Do the four PoE ports power any four cameras?
They power four cameras within the recorder’s total PoE budget. High-draw units such as PTZ or heated housings can exceed it. Send us your camera list on 16454 and we will check the load before you order.

Which hard drive should I fit?
The one that meets the client’s retention target at their camera resolutions, within the drive capacity the unit supports. Give us the retention days and camera models and we will confirm the supported maximum and quote a surveillance-grade drive alongside the recorder.
