The /8P on the end of DS-7608NXI-K2/8P is eight PoE ports on the back panel, one for each of the eight channels this recorder handles, so the NVR is the power supply as well: a camera arrives on a single run of cable and needs nothing else at the head end. K2 is the pair of drive bays; drives are not supplied.

The letters that decide where this unit belongs are NXI. That is Hikvision’s AcuSense line, and on this series the person and vehicle classification is done by the recorder, on the streams coming into it, rather than by analytics inside each camera. A small distinction on a datasheet and a large one on a quotation.

Where it earns its place on a job

Classification at the recorder means filtered alarms out of cameras that have no AcuSense of their own, including cameras already screwed to the wall. That is the retrofit case and the commercial argument for this box: a site drowning in motion alerts from foliage and headlights gets person and vehicle filtering across the estate by changing one piece of hardware, and review becomes a search by target rather than a scrub through a timeline.

Be equally clear about what it does not do. A smart recorder improves what you are told about the picture; it cannot improve the picture. Classification is only as good as the image handed to it, so a camera shooting into a low sun, a dome nobody has cleaned since commissioning, or a view so wide a person is a handful of pixels will still produce misses and false calls. It does not make an old camera see better; it reads what arrives.

The built-in PoE stops being an advantage in a building that already has switching: if the cameras run off a separate PoE switch in an existing comms cabinet, quote the no-PoE version, the DS-7608NXI-K2, rather than paying twice for ports you own.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• Audit what is already installed. Before choosing between smart cameras and a smart recorder, list the camera models on site, their age and what each is pointed at. Usable images from unintelligent cameras is exactly the case for this recorder. If the images are the problem, no recorder rescues them and the budget belongs at the camera end.
• Camera count against the eight ports. A ninth camera, or one too far out for a straight run back to the rack, still needs a switch or an injector — put it on the quote, not on site.
• Drive capacity against real retention. Two bays, no drives included. Tell us the channel count, the days the insurer or landlord requires and the resolution you will run, and we will size a surveillance-rated pair.

Common questions on this model

Will it give me person and vehicle alarms from cameras that are not AcuSense?
That is the point of the NXI series: classification runs on the recorder, so ordinary IP cameras can feed a filtered alarm list. How well it works depends on the framing and image quality they deliver.

Do I still need a PoE switch?
Not for eight cameras within cable reach of the rack. Beyond eight, or for a remote cluster, you are back to a switch that has to be priced.

Is a smart recorder as good as smart cameras?
For upgrading the alarm list on an existing estate without replacing hardware, it is cheaper and faster. On a new build specified from nothing, analytics at the camera is the stronger design.
