Sixty-four IP camera channels and eight drive bays put the DS-9664NXI-I8/VPRO at the top of Hikvision’s I/VPro NVR line, and at the point in a project where recorded video stops being reassurance and starts being paperwork. On a logistics depot, a factory, a hospital wing, a retail estate or a walled compound, nobody watches the screens. They go into the archive because an insurer, an HR panel or a regulator has asked a question.

The unit is an AcuSense recorder — that is the NXI in the code — and it carries AcuSeek, Hikvision’s capability for finding something in recorded footage by describing it rather than scrubbing a timeline. At this scale that is the difference between a request answered the same morning and one that quietly gets dropped. Where it earns its place on a job

Channel count is the easy half of the sizing conversation. The harder half is that on these sites video enters a process: an incident is reported, somebody works out which camera and minute, pulls a clip, and sends it to a person outside the organisation who will judge it. Every one of those steps is where large installations fail — almost never the recording. The eight bays exist so the archive still covers the weeks between an event and someone asking about it.

A clip nobody can locate is worth what a clip you never recorded is worth, and at sixty-four channels that is the failure that actually happens.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• Time source and export format — agree the NTP server the recorder synchronises to, and confirm on the datasheet which export formats the shipping firmware writes. A clip with a drifted clock is arguable, and a file the recipient’s IT department cannot open is a clip you did not really send.
• Drives and the retention window — the bays are bays. Storage is ordered separately, and the drive types this model accepts are on the datasheet. Set the retention target by how long the site’s own processes take to raise a complaint.
• Who may export, and from where — requests arrive from managers, HR and insurers, at whoever is nearest. Set up named accounts with export rights before handover, or the admin password ends up shared around the site office.

Compatibility

A Hikvision recorder for Hikvision IP cameras, managed locally or through Hik-Connect and iVMS-4200 for remote and multi-site work. Third-party camera support, and the AcuSense and AcuSeek behaviour available per channel, are datasheet questions for the shipping firmware — worth settling on an estate built up over years by different contractors. Common questions on this model

Our insurer has asked for footage from three weeks ago — will an export from this recorder be accepted?
That turns on two things set at commissioning: whether the clock was right when the footage was written, and whether the export format is one the recipient can open unaided.

Two buildings on one site — one 64-channel unit or two 32-channel units?
One unit if the buildings share a reliable link and one team answers footage requests for both, because a single archive is a single place to search. Two if the link is the weak point.

Do all sixty-four cameras have to be a particular model for AcuSeek to be useful?
Ask us for the datasheet before assuming either way. The searchable behaviour available per channel is firmware-specific, and that is where a mixed estate catches people out.
