Hikvision 4-Port Gigabit PoE Switch DS-XS06G-P

The DS-XS06G-P is the small Hikvision gigabit PoE switch that ends up in a ceiling void or a cupboard on a four-camera job, carrying data and power to every camera from one box. It is a DS-XS series switch with four PoE ports, usually specified in ten seconds because it is the cheapest line on the quotation.

That ten seconds is the problem. Every camera runs through this one unit, and almost nobody treats it as the single point of failure it is. When a camera dies, the client loses one view. When this switch dies, the client loses the system.

Where it earns its place on a job

It earns its place because a four-camera site needs nothing cleverer. The mistake is not choosing it, but choosing it and never saying, to yourself or the client, what happens when it stops. What happens is worse than a camera fault, because it is silent: a failed camera announces itself, a failed switch sets off nothing anyone is watching. The recorder simply stops receiving, and on a site nobody checks daily that can go unnoticed for a week, found on the day the client needs the footage.

Three answers, all cheaper than that call. Say it at quotation, not after. One line in the proposal — all cameras route through this switch, and if it fails the site goes down until it is replaced — costs nothing. In advance that is advice; afterwards, an excuse.

Keep a spare on any site that matters. A switch is a small fraction of what the client spent, and its absence stops all of it; a spare in the site office turns a week of lost recording into twenty minutes with a screwdriver. Clients will happily pay for a spare camera they can see on the wall and refuse a spare switch they cannot, and that is exactly backwards. Standardise and one spare covers several sites, including the eight-port DS-XS10G-P on larger jobs.

Put it on the same protected supply as the recorder. If the recorder rides out a power blip and the switch does not, every camera drops and returns in a different order, the recorder logs video-loss events, and the client decides the system is unreliable. A protected recorder behind an unprotected switch records nothing.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• Power and UPS. Confirm what powers the switch on site, whether there is a UPS, and whether the switch goes on it beside the recorder rather than the nearest socket.
• Power per camera. Check power figures for the cameras on the drawing against the switch datasheet before committing — manufacturer documents, not memory.
• Who replaces it, how fast. Agree before handover whether a spare lives on site, in the van, or is a next-day order — and make sure the client knows which.

What actually happens when this switch fails?
Every camera on it goes dark at once, because it carries their power as well as their data, while the recorder keeps running and receives nothing. There is no alarm unless someone is watching live view or the video-loss log. Plan for the silence, not the fault.

Is a spare really worth it on a four-camera site?
Compare its cost against the system it carries, and against a week of no recording. On a site that matters it pays for itself the first time it is used.

Can I run it from the same UPS as the NVR?
That is exactly where it belongs. Confirm the UPS has capacity for the switch and its load as well as the recorder, taking the switch figures from the datasheet.
