Hikvision 8-Port Gigabit PoE Switch DS-XS10G-P

The DS-XS10G-P is Hikvision’s eight-port Gigabit PoE switch from the DS-XS series, and on a camera job it is where eight separate cable runs — pulled by someone, to some specification — finally meet. Choosing the switch is the short conversation. The eight runs are the job.

Switch selection attracts more argument on site than cable selection, while the failures run the other way round. A PoE port sends power and signal down the same jacket, so the copper is doing electrical work as well as carrying data — and resistance a file server would never notice becomes voltage lost at the far end of a long run.

Where it earns its place on a job

Eight Gigabit PoE ports suit many small commercial jobs — a shop, a clinic, an office floor, a gate. But the switch only performs as well as the cable plant lets it, and the commonest reason a PoE camera works on the bench and drops out at the end of a run is copper-clad aluminium sold as Cat 5e or Cat 6. CCA looks identical in the drum, terminates the same and passes a continuity test, but its resistance is far higher than solid copper’s.

Termination is the same problem’s second half — a pair untwisted too far back, a marginal punch-down, a boot crushed against a tray edge. None of that stops a link coming up; it makes the link come up and then fall over. So does a run sharing a tray with mains. A switch fails honestly, powering a port or not; bad cable fails dishonestly, twice a day, usually at night — and gets blamed on the camera, then the switch, then the recorder, long before anyone tests the run.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• Who supplies and terminates the cable, and to what written specification — the structured cabling is often a different contractor’s scope. Get solid copper, the category and the termination standard into that scope before the switch arrives.
• The routed length of each of the eight runs — measured along the real route, including drops and service loops, not the straight line on the drawing.
• Whether any run shares a tray or conduit with mains — and if so, what separation. Cheaper to settle at first fix than at commissioning.

Compatibility here is settled by two datasheets read side by side: what this switch is rated to supply, and what each camera is rated to draw at the run length you actually have. Common questions on this model

The camera keeps dropping out. Is the switch faulty?
Rarely, and the most expensive place to start swapping parts. Put the suspect camera on a short patch lead at the switch and leave it a full day and night. If it behaves, camera and switch are sound and the run is the suspect. Then move it to a different port on the same run, and to a different run on the same port.

How do I tell copper-clad aluminium from solid copper on site?
Nick the conductor and look at the core: solid copper is copper throughout, CCA shows silver-grey under a thin copper skin. It also feels stiffer and snaps rather than bends after a few flexes. Check before the cable goes into the ceiling.

The building is already cabled and nobody knows what was used. What now?
Test before you commit. A certifying tester across the eight runs costs a fraction of a day — skip it and you inherit somebody else’s cable as an unpriced risk on your own job.
