The DS-3E0110MP-E/M is an eight-port Fast Ethernet PoE switch from Hikvision’s DS-3E0 range, and on most jobs it is the only powered electronics on site outside the comms room. It ends up wherever the cable run and the nearest socket agreed: a riser cupboard, a shelf above a ceiling tile, a plant room, a box on an outside wall.

Eight PoE ports is the size of an ordinary small site: a shop, a clinic floor, a warehouse office, a villa gate. Each camera arrives on one cable carrying power and data, so the switch wants to sit near the cameras rather than at the rack — rarely anywhere comfortable.

So price the position, not just the box. It needs mains power at that exact spot, which on a refurbished site means an electrician, not a lead trailing through a ceiling void. It needs air: a sealed box on a west-facing wall in an Egyptian summer is an oven. It needs to be reachable at eight on a Thursday evening by whoever is on site, not only by the installer who fitted it. And it needs to be somewhere a cleaner or a tenant will not quietly unplug for a vacuum.

Here is the part installers know and clients do not. The DS-3E0 line is Hikvision’s unmanaged, zero-configuration family: nothing to log into, no alert, no reboot from a phone. It is either working or it is not, and the first anyone hears of it is cameras dropping off the recorder. Its physical accessibility is its maintenance plan. Before you order — three things to confirm

• The position, its power and who can reach it. Mark the spot on the drawing, confirm a mains socket at it, and name the person on site who can get to it without a ladder or a key nobody holds.
• The enclosure and its ventilation. If it is not going in a comms room, decide what it sits in, whether that box is ventilated and whether it takes sun.

Common questions on this model

Can we mount it outside?
Only inside a proper enclosure: ventilated so it does not cook in the afternoon, with a power supply arranged inside it. A sealed box on a wall is not an outdoor installation, it is a slow failure. We quote that separately.

It has to go above a ceiling tile or in a locked riser. Is that acceptable?
Workable, provided someone on site every day can reach it and knows it is there. Label the socket and the tile and hand that over at completion. A position only the installer could find is not.

Every camera dropped at once. What do we check first?
The switch and its socket. Nothing on this unit will announce that it has stopped, so the fault begins with someone physically looking at it.
