WD Purple 2TB Surveillance Hard Drive WD23PURZ

The WD Purple 2 TB (WD23PURZ) is a 3.5-inch SATA hard drive from Western Digital for surveillance recorders: firmware tuned for continuous video writing rather than desktop use.

Where it fits

DVRs and NVRs in homes, shops and small businesses, recording continuously.

Where it is the wrong choice: desktop PCs and servers — it is tuned for video recording.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• Recorder support. Confirm your recorder accepts a 2 TB drive per bay (see its datasheet).
• Retention. Send the camera count, resolution and days of retention — we check whether 2 TB is enough.
• Number of drives. Larger systems split recording across several drives; confirm the number of bays.
