Where it earns its place on a job

Channel count and retention depth pull against each other, and most recorders lean hard one way: many channels into two bays is wide coverage with a short memory; few channels across many bays, a long look-back on very little. This one refuses to lean — and balance is an underrated thing to sell, because the site that needs it rarely asks for it by name.

That site is a mid-size one: a school, a clinic, a medium factory, a mid-size retail unit. Sixteen cameras covers its entrances, yard, stock area and tills, and four bays give it a look-back measured in months, not a fortnight — what matters when the thing reviewed is a shrinkage pattern, a disputed delivery or a late claim.

The work is spotting a client sold the wrong shape. A buyer pushed toward thirty-two channels on two bays — something like the 32-channel DS-7632NXI-K2 — is buying channels they will never fill and paying in retention. One pushed down to an eight-channel two-bay box to save money on day one is buying a recorder swap in eighteen months. Count the cameras the site will run in three years, then ask how far back somebody will need to look — the recorder nobody argues about in the design meeting is usually the one that was specified correctly.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• Whether the four bays are filled now or later. Half-populating this chassis is a good plan when it is a plan — buy the box once, add drives as demand grows. Unplanned, it is a surprise invoice in month three. Say which on the quote.
• Sixteen ports means sixteen cameras. A seventeenth, or one too far out for a straight run to the rack, needs a switch or an injector — on the bill of materials, before the cabling is pulled.
• The retention figure somebody is actually asking for. Insurer, landlord or head office usually has a number in days. Give us that, the channel count and the resolution, and we will size surveillance-rated drives to it.

Common questions on this model

Do I have to fill all four bays to start?
No. Run fewer drives and add the rest as retention needs grow. Cost the drives at design stage so the growth is budgeted, not discovered.

We only have ten cameras. Is sixteen channels wasteful?
For a site that has finished growing, yes; a smaller box is the honest answer. For a school or factory adding cameras a few at a time, the spare channels and bays are why you will not replace the recorder mid-contract.

Do the built-in PoE ports remove the need for a switch?
For sixteen cameras within cable reach of the rack, yes — each arrives on one run and needs nothing at the head end. Remote clusters, or anything beyond sixteen, need switching priced separately.
