The DS-9632NI-M8 records 32 IP cameras and holds eight hard drives, which makes it head-end equipment — a rack device for a comms room, not a box to tuck behind a reception desk. The 9632 is the channel count, the M8 the eight drive bays, and it is 8K capable on the output side.

There is no /P in the model code, so there are no built-in PoE ports: all 32 cameras take power from a separate switch that has to be on the quote, in the cabinet and in the power budget. That is the easy part. The hard part is the room.

Where it earns its place on a job

Eight bays and 32 channels means a chassis with rack ears and a fan doing real work. It needs a cabinet with genuine depth — not a shallow wall box bought for a patch panel — and air moving through it. A recorder in a sealed cupboard runs happily right up until a hot afternoon in July, when the drives throw errors that look like a firmware fault and are actually a heat fault. Survey the room before committing to the model.

Power is the other half of that question. Eight spinning drives do not enjoy Egypt’s supply, and a dirty cut mid-write is how file systems get corrupted and how disks age early. A UPS is part of the specification here, sized to hold the recorder and the camera switches long enough for a clean shutdown, not merely to blink the lights.

Then the drives. Eight bays make redundancy possible, and possible is not configured: an array protects footage only if somebody set it up that way at commissioning and somebody reads the alerts afterwards. Say it plainly, because it is true — the commonest way a large recorder fails its owner is not a fault at all, it is a drive that died eleven months ago and nobody was ever told. If the camera schedule is already past 32 and climbing, price the 64-channel DS-9664NI-M8 instead of running two recorders nobody wants to administer.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• The cabinet and the air. Confirm rack depth, free height and ventilation before the unit ships. A cabinet chosen for network gear will not automatically keep eight drives cool through an Egyptian summer.
• The UPS, sized properly. Recorder, camera switches and monitor on the same protected supply, with runtime for a controlled shutdown. Retrofitting clean power after a corrupted array is a worse conversation.
• Who watches the drives. Agree at handover who receives the health alert and who replaces a failed disk. Eight bays only buy resilience if the failure is noticed.

Common questions on this model

Does it need a proper rack, or will a wall cabinet do?
It needs a cabinet with real depth and airflow. A shallow wall box fights the chassis, and a sealed one cooks the drives. Measure before ordering.

If a drive fails, do I lose the footage?
Only if the array was never configured for redundancy, or if nobody notices. Both are decisions made by people, not by the recorder. Set the alerting up at commissioning.

Can I start with fewer drives and fill the bays later?
Yes, but agree the redundancy plan first. Changing the array layout on a live system is more disruptive than buying the right drives on day one — call 16454.
