Hikvision 65-Inch Interactive Touch Display DS-D5A65RB/A3

The DS-D5A65RB/A3 is the 65-inch panel in Hikvision’s DS-D5A interactive range, an A3-revision unit with a touch layer, and it usually lands in a meeting or training room that already has its furniture and windows. What gets specified is the panel. What decides whether the room works is the wall it goes on.

Here is the part that never reaches the specification. A screen this size is switched off, or idle, for most of the hours it spends in the room, and for those hours it is a large sheet of dark glass facing the seats, reflecting whatever is behind them. In a room glazed on two sides — most modern fit-outs here — there is often no position where the panel is neither mirroring a window nor washed out by one.

Where it earns its place on a job

It earns its place where somebody will spend twenty minutes choosing the wall. The wall opposite the main window is the one people pick, because it faces the door and looks tidy on the drawing, and it is usually the worst choice: every bright thing behind the seats ends up in the glass.

The finish around the panel matters more than most lines on the quotation — matte paint in a mid tone behind and beside the display does more for the perceived quality of the installation than anything printed on a datasheet. Specify a 65-inch panel as a mirror first and a display second, and the room will look better switched off than most rooms look switched on. With two rooms on one order, walk each separately; the 75-inch DS-D5C75RB/B2L next door may end up on the opposite wall for reasons unrelated to either panel.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• Walk the room with the screen off — at the hour it is booked, not at handover. Stand at each seat, look for reflected sky, glazing and light fittings, and choose the wall from that walk before the bracket is ordered.
• What sits behind the seats — a glazed partition, a gloss wall or a downlight straight in front of the display will be in the dark glass all day. Settle the wall finish and the lighting circuit before the fixing position is signed off.
• Revision and carton contents — this is the A3 revision of the DS-D5A65RB. What the A3 changes over the earlier A2 is confirmed against the manufacturer datasheet before we quote, and so is what ships in the carton.

What connects to the panel comes from the datasheet rather than a product page, and we confirm it in writing for the A3 revision before quoting. What it has to live with catches more jobs out: the wall finish, the ceiling fitting nearest the screen and the blind opposite are part of this installation, whether or not they appear on the drawing.

Common questions on this model

Where in the room should it actually go?
Not, by default, on the wall facing the door. Sit in the room at its booking time with the panel off and pick the wall where the fewest bright surfaces appear in the glass — usually one on the same side as the glazing. Then fix at seated eye height rather than the height that centres it on the wall.

Can we stop it looking like a black mirror when it is off?
Not entirely — every large panel is reflective when dark. You control what stands behind the viewers and how the wall around it is finished. Matte paint, a blind that gets closed and no light fitting directly in front of the screen take most of it away.

What should it show when nobody is presenting?
In a client-facing room that is a decision somebody should make, not a default nobody chose. A source logo or a standby banner on the wall through a meeting reads as an unfinished room.
