Hikvision Fingerprint Reader DS-K1201AMF

The DS-K1201AMF is a fingerprint reader, and the important word is reader. It captures a print and passes the result down a cable to a separate Hikvision access controller, which decides whether the door opens and switches the lock. By itself it opens nothing. On a lot of doors that is not a limitation to work around — it is the reason to specify it.

Every controlled door has two sides. The secure side is what you are protecting. The insecure side is where the person who has not been let in yet stands. Anything mounted there can be prised off, cut or have its cable attacked, and you will not be watching. The only question is what the attacker holds afterwards.

Where it earns its place on a job

An all-in-one terminal holds the user database and drives the lock relay, with the lock wiring behind it. Rip it off and the attacker holds the thing that opens the door, relay contacts and all. A reader has nothing behind it but a cable to a controller on the secure side, in a locked cupboard or comms rack, and that controller holds the users and switches the lock. Cutting the reader off breaks a reader, nothing more. A terminal on the insecure side of a door is a lock with the release button screwed to the outside wall.

The principle only pays out if the installation respects it. The cable must go straight through the wall and stay in containment on the secure side, never looping back through a reachable ceiling void outside, and the controller must sit somewhere genuinely locked. Get that wrong and you have a reader architecture with a terminal’s exposure.

There is a point where none of this matters. A store cupboard or an office inside an already controlled floor — nobody is attacking anything there, and a terminal is fine. Keep this architecture for main entrances, server rooms, cash rooms and doors facing a car park, a street or a shared lobby. If such a door wants a card and a PIN rather than a print, the DS-K1102AMK follows the same rule.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• Which side of the door it is going on. Nobody asks until the survey, and it changes the answer. On the insecure side a reader is correct and a terminal is not. Inside a low-risk door, price decides.
• Which controller it reports to. A reader is half a system. Confirm the controller model, a free reader port for this door, and a matching interface at both ends.
• The cable route and the cupboard. Agree where the controller lives, that it is lockable and on the secure side, and that the run reaches it without passing back outside.

Common questions on this model

Can it run a door on its own, without a controller?
No. It reads the finger and reports; something else decides and switches the lock. Budget the controller into the same order.

If someone tears it off the wall, does the door open?
Not if it is wired properly. The controller on the secure side switches the lock, so the attacker is left with a broken reader and a pair of signal wires.

Are the enrolled fingerprints held in the unit outside the door?
Enrolment and permissions are administered on the controller side, keeping the sensitive part of the system inside the protected area. Storage behaviour for your pairing is confirmed from the datasheet.
