The DS-TMG520-M/B is the straight-boom version of Hikvision’s TMG520 barrier gate, and that one word carries more site risk than anything else on the order. A straight boom is a single rigid pole that sweeps through a quarter circle and finishes near vertical above the cabinet: the simplest and cheapest arm made, and the right answer in most lanes — provided the lane has the empty air the arm needs.

That proviso is where specification goes wrong. Buyers survey at ground level and never look up. A canopy over a compound gate, a low soffit at a car park entrance, an overhead pipe run in a factory yard — each removes the vertical clearance the boom passes through on its way up. Articulated and folding booms exist for exactly those lanes, and choosing one is not a downgrade.

Where it earns its place on a job

This is lane control for paid parking, residential compounds, factory yards and hospital car parks — anywhere vehicles are stopped and released one at a time. Clear sky above the lane is the ordinary case, which is why the straight boom is the default. Where one lane on a job sits under structure, survey it separately; the barrier gates and turnstiles range is where the alternative arm arrangements sit.

One more thing before quotation: a barrier with a broken boom is not a slow lane, it is an open lane, and it stays open until the spare arrives. The boom is the part that gets hit, so treat a spare as part of the installation, not a later repair.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• Overhead clearance through the full arc. Measure the height available while the boom is moving, not at rest. The critical dimension is the free height over the pivot, clear of canopies, ducting, cable trays and signage all the way up.
• Lane width, and what sits above the far end. Confirm the clear span the arm must cover, and check the far kerb as well as the pivot — an overhang or a wall light at the resting end will strike the boom every cycle even when the pivot is clear.
• What triggers the lane. Decide at quotation whether loop detectors, a reader, a button or a management platform drives it, and confirm the duct route before the plinth is poured.

The boom gets hit. What happens, and what does a spare cost?
Ask for the replacement boom price and lead time at quotation, not after the event. A struck arm leaves the lane permanently open, so where the barrier does real security work, not traffic calming, order a spare pole and keep it on site.

Can I fit this under a car park canopy or a low soffit?
Only if the clearance over the pivot exceeds the height the boom reaches while opening — measure before ordering. If it does not clear, that lane needs an articulated or folding boom, not a shorter straight one: shortening the arm reduces the span, not the swing height.

Do I need one barrier for a two-way lane, or one each way?
One barrier can control a shared in-and-out lane where volume is low. Separate entry and exit barriers are what you fit where queuing matters, where the directions use different credentials, or where a tailgating vehicle must not follow another through on one cycle.
