Ten terabytes is the capacity installers reach for when the recorder is the only copy of anything that happens on site. The WD Purple 10TB is a Western Digital surveillance-class drive, from the Purple family WD builds for video recorders rather than desktops, and it tends to go into a machine that is then left alone for years.

Which is where the uncomfortable part sits. A drive in a recorder is a consumable. It spins from handover until the day it stops, and one day it will stop — that is what mechanical storage does after years of uninterrupted duty. The question worth settling before this reaches a quotation is not whether it fails, but what the system does on the morning it does.

Where it earns its place on a job

Answer honestly and the specification usually changes. A single-drive recorder has no answer: when the drive goes, recording stops and everything already on it goes with it, and the client finds out at the moment they need last Tuesday. A recorder with two or more bays can be configured for redundancy, which costs capacity but survives a failure. Neither choice is wrong. What is wrong is selling the first while letting the client believe they bought the second.

The other half costs nothing, and nobody does it. Nobody watches drive health unless somebody was asked to, and most recorders carry a drive status page no one has opened since commissioning day. Three cheap habits at handover fix that: check the page on a schedule, agree in writing who does it, and note the drive model and capacity on the handover sheet so a replacement is a phone call rather than an investigation. The client who says “we have cameras” and has not looked inside the recorder in three years almost always has less footage than he thinks.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• Bay count, and whether redundancy is wanted. Ask how many bays the recorder has, then put the redundancy question to the client directly. It decides failure day and changes how many drives go on the quotation.
• The recorder’s per-bay capacity ceiling. That limit sits in the recorder’s firmware, not the drive. Confirm from its documentation that it accepts 10 TB in one bay.
• Who checks it afterwards. Name the person responsible for drive health, and leave the model and capacity somewhere the site can find them.

The constraint that catches people is the recorder’s maximum supported capacity per bay, a firmware limit stated in its documentation — call us with the model and we will check. Common questions on this model

How long will 10 TB record for?
There is no honest single number, and anyone who gives you one has guessed. It depends on camera count, resolution, frame rate, codec and whether recording is continuous or on motion. Send us the camera list on 16454 and we will work it.

Do I need more than one drive?
A single drive is fine provided the client understands that its failure ends both the live recording and the archive on it. If that is unacceptable, the answer is spare bays and a redundant configuration. Decide it with the client, not for them.

How will I know it is going before it goes?
Through the recorder’s drive health page and its alert settings, which is why somebody has to be assigned to look. A drive reporting warnings into an empty room for two months is the normal way this ends.
