Western Digital WD Purple 6TB Surveillance Hard Drive

A desktop hard drive spends most of its life doing nothing: it wakes, writes a few megabytes, and goes quiet again, and every design decision inside it assumes that rhythm. The WD Purple 6TB is built on the opposite assumption: that eight or sixteen cameras will push video into it every second of every day and that the write stream will never pause long enough for the drive to rest. That is why surveillance drives are a separate product line rather than a marketing label, and why a desktop drive dropped into an NVR tends to fail in its second year rather than its sixth.

This is a Western Digital product from the Purple family, the line WD builds for continuous-write video recording. It is a 6 TB, 3.5-inch SATA drive: it belongs in a recorder bay, not a workstation.

Where it earns its place on a job

Storage is the part of a CCTV system the client experiences exactly once: the day something goes wrong and they ask to see last month. Everything else on the job is visible; the drive is not, which is why it is the line most often trimmed to make a quote competitive. An installer who wins a tender by fitting 2 TB where the brief needed 6 TB has not saved the client money; he has sold a system that overwrites the evidence before anyone thinks to look for it.

Size the storage against the retention the client actually asked for, and do it before the number goes on the quotation. Retention is not a feature you add later; it is a number you either bought on installation day or you did not. Six terabytes is the capacity that tends to suit mid-size work, the branch, the warehouse, the compound entrance, where a smaller drive drops the client to a fortnight of history.

Before you order

• Retention against cameras and resolution. Ask how many days back the client expects to look, then work that against camera count, resolution, frame rate and whether recording is continuous or motion-triggered. Two sites with identical camera counts can differ threefold.
• The recorder’s bays and its per-bay limit. Confirm how many 3.5-inch bays are free and the maximum drive size the recorder’s firmware supports; a recorder that caps at 4 TB per bay will not use a 6 TB drive properly however it is formatted.
• Size it before the quote, not after. Storage added as a variation once the job is signed is the most awkward conversation in this trade.

Common questions on this model

Can I not fit a normal desktop drive and save the difference?
It will mount and it will record, and that is the trap. A desktop drive is rated for an idle-heavy duty cycle, not a permanent multi-stream write load, and the failure usually lands while the system is still your responsibility.

How many days of recording will 6 TB give me?
There is no honest single answer: it depends on camera count, resolution, frame rate, codec and whether the recorder runs continuously or on motion. Send the camera schedule to 16454 and we will work the figure through before you quote.

Will it work with my recorder?
If it has a free 3.5-inch SATA bay and supports 6 TB per bay, yes. The per-bay ceiling is the thing to verify, and it is stated in the recorder’s documentation.
