The DS-K1T502DBWX-C is a K1T502-series access control terminal from Hikvision, and on most jobs it goes onto a door that has been hanging for fifteen years. Almost nobody builds a new opening in order to control it — they take a leaf, a frame and a lock case that already exist, and ask for the traffic through them to be logged.

That makes the terminal the easy part. It goes on the wall, takes network and power, and reports to the software. The difficulty is the frame material, the cable route, whether the door shuts on its own, and whether it sits on an escape route. That is a survey, not a product choice.

Where it earns its place on a job

Start with the frame, because it decides whether a lock can be held at all. Hollow pressed-steel frames usually take a strike or a magnet with a backing plate, but you need to know what is behind the section first. Aluminium glazed sections are narrow and full of beads and drainage, so a few millimetres of face width can dictate the lock. Old timber fixes well but is rarely square, and frameless glass doors are a project of their own.

Then the cable. A terminal at the door and a power supply somewhere secure means a route between the two, and in Egyptian buildings that route is often blocked by marble cladding, a granite reveal or a ceiling nobody will open. Surface trunking is a legitimate answer, agreed before the quotation. Where the exit face needs only a plain reader, the DS-K1102AMK card reader covers it more cheaply than a second terminal.

Then the closer. An access-controlled door that does not close itself is not a controlled door — it is an open door with a very detailed logbook. A new closer, or an old one adjusted so the leaf latches every time rather than most times, belongs on the quotation as its own line. If the door is on a means of escape, the release arrangement is set by the fire strategy and the authority having jurisdiction, not by the terminal. On a retrofit this device is usually the cheapest item on the list.

Before you order — three things to confirm

• Frame and leaf — the frame material, its face width, and whether there is solid material to fix a lock or magnet into. The frame drives the lock, and the lock drives the job.
• Cable route and power — where the network drop lands, where the power supply sits, and whether a route to the door exists that avoids chasing a stone-clad wall.
• Photographs before the order goes in — the door open and closed, both faces, the frame head and hinge side, the existing closer, and any fire-exit signage. That is what lets us tell you the truth at quotation.
