PoE Switch Sizing Guide for CCTV: How Many Ports and Watts Do You Need?
The PoE switch is the least glamorous part of a camera system — and the most common thing people get wrong. Undersize it and cameras randomly drop offline; oversize it and you’ve wasted budget. Here’s the simple sizing method our engineers at Speed4Trading use on every project.
What a PoE Switch Actually Does
Power over Ethernet (PoE) sends both data and electrical power through one network cable. One cable per camera — no separate power supplies, no electrician for every camera point. Your cameras plug into the switch; the switch plugs into your NVR.
Step 1: Count Your Ports (with headroom)
Rule: camera count + 1 uplink + 25% spare. For 6 cameras, don’t buy an 8-port that’s already full counting the uplink — either keep 1–2 ports free or go one size up.
Step 2: Do the Power Budget Math
Every switch has a total PoE power budget shared across ports. Typical camera draws:
- Fixed 2–4MP camera: 6–9W
- ColorVu / cameras with active light: 10–13W
- PTZ (motorized) cameras: 20–60W — check the spec sheet
Add your cameras’ watts, then add 30% safety margin. Example: 8 fixed cameras × 8W = 64W × 1.3 = ~83W minimum budget.
Step 3: Fast Ethernet or Gigabit?
Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps/port) is fine for up to 8 cameras at 2–4MP. Gigabit is the safer choice for 4K cameras, longer chains, or any system you plan to grow. The price difference in 2026 is small — when in doubt, go Gigabit.

The Long-Range Trick (250m)
Standard Ethernet maxes out at ~100 meters. Hikvision’s E/M “Long-Range” switches push PoE to 250m in extend mode — ideal for gates, fences, and warehouse corners without adding repeaters or fiber.

FAQ
Can I plug non-camera devices into a PoE switch?
Yes — PoE ports auto-negotiate. Laptops and printers just get data; PoE devices (access points, IP phones, door stations) get power too.
What happens if I exceed the power budget?
The switch starts dropping power to some ports — cameras reboot randomly or go offline, usually the ones farthest away. If that’s happening to you, your budget is undersized.
Do I need a managed switch for CCTV?
For most CCTV systems an unmanaged PoE switch is enough. Managed switches matter for large multi-switch networks with VLANs — typical in compounds and factories.
