The DS-TCG406-E is Hikvision’s 4 MP ANPR camera for access lanes — its job is not to cover a scene but to read one number plate per vehicle, cleanly enough that a barrier can act on it. It is specified by the lane, not the site.

Say it plainly: plate recognition is a geometry and lighting problem before it is a camera problem. The camera sets the ceiling; the approach, the mounting and the light at the plate decide how much of it you get.

Where it earns its place on a site

Four things have to come from the lane, not from the box. A straight approach, so the plate presents square to the lens rather than at a steep angle — a vehicle swinging in from the side shows a compressed, skewed plate, the commonest cause of a bad lane. A mounting position and height that pin down where the plate will be when it is read. A vehicle stopped, or nearly so, at a defined point — which is why ANPR belongs at a barrier and not on an open road. And controlled light on the plate: headlights straight into the lens after dark, and hard sun behind an arriving vehicle by day, defeat plate reads, and both are fixed by where you stand the pole.

Then be honest. Plates caked in dust, bent, repainted, half hidden by a tow bar, non-standard or foreign will not read reliably — not on this camera, not on any. That is the population arriving at an Egyptian gate. So decide what the barrier does when the read fails: hold the vehicle indefinitely, or an intercom, a guard, a card or remote as a second credential? An ANPR lane with no fallback is not an unmanned lane — it is a lane with a permanent attendant, which is exactly the cost the client was trying to remove. Before you order — three things to confirm

• The lane survey. Stand where the camera will go and watch where a car actually stops. Straight approach, defined stop point, workable height, square angle to the plate — confirm on site before ordering, not after the pole is concreted in.
• Light at the plate. Walk the lane at night with headlights on, and again with the afternoon sun behind an arriving vehicle. If either washes the plate out, the fix is position, or a lane light.
• The failure path. Agree in writing what happens on a failed read — intercom, guard, second credential or manual release — and who owns it. That clause decides whether the client calls the job a success.

Common questions on this model

What recognition accuracy will we get?
Honestly, it depends on the lane, and we will not quote a percentage. Approach angle, stop position, mounting height, lighting and the state of the plates decide it far more than the camera does. Send photographs of the gate and we will look at it with you, including if the lane needs work first.

Can it read plates from vehicles at speed?
Treat it as an access-control camera, not a highway camera. It belongs where vehicles slow to a stop. Ask us before designing it into a free-flow lane.

What about vans, foreign plates and dirty plates?
Some will fail. Plan the exception rather than assume it away — an intercom and a guard on call cost a fraction of a guard reading every plate.
