Forty-five times optical zoom is a specification you buy for one reason: somebody, or something, is going to point it. The DS-2DE7A245IX-AE/S1 is Hikvision’s 7-series network speed dome — a 2 MP head with a 45× optical zoom block and IR supplement lighting on a motorised pan-and-tilt mount. What you pay for is reach from a single mast.

Which is why it belongs on a site that has somebody watching. A guardhouse with a screen, a control desk, a plant with a shift operator: that is the centre of gravity for a dome this size. The value comes out of a joystick or client software in someone’s hands, presets on the positions that matter, patrol tours for the hours the desk is empty, and event links that swing the head to a preset when a fixed camera or gate contact raises an alarm. Where it earns its place on a site

The applications that justify the money are the manned ones: refinery and factory compounds with a security office, port terminals, open storage yards, gated communities with a staffed gatehouse. It sits above a layer of fixed cameras that hold the evidence positions on gates and lanes; the dome is what the operator reaches for when the radio call comes in.

The second case is automated, and installers under-sell it: tours, presets and alarm-triggered movement keep the dome working after the guard goes home, provided the recorder or VMS is configured for it. If the furthest point of interest is fifty metres away and nobody is at a screen, buy fixed cameras instead. Before you order — three things to confirm

• Who drives it, and from what. Confirm there is an operator position — joystick, keyboard or client software on a manned PC — or price the presets, tours and alarm links into the commissioning scope. Confirm the NVR or VMS supports PTZ control and event-triggered movement.
• Power and the cable run. A full-size dome running motors, zoom and IR draws far more than the fixed cameras on your switch, and the peak is what matters. Confirm the supply method and maximum run against the datasheet.
• The mount and what it is bolted to. Mounting hardware and the junction box are ordered separately at this class, and the pole or parapet must be stiff enough — at full magnification a mast that flexes in the wind gives you nothing usable.

Compatibility

A standard Hikvision network camera: it works with Hikvision NVRs and with Hik-Connect, iVMS-4200 and HikCentral for live view, recording and joystick PTZ control. Common questions on this model

Will it track a person or a vehicle by itself?
Do not sell it on that assumption. Tracking behaviour varies by model and firmware revision, and the version shipping in a batch is what you get. Call 16454 before you specify it.

We have one guard at night and no control room. Is this the wrong camera?
It is, unless it is commissioned properly. With presets, a tour and alarm links from the gate it still earns its place unmanned. Without them, fixed cameras over the same ground serve you better.

Can an alarm from a fixed camera or the barrier make the dome look at it?
That linkage lives in the recorder or VMS, not the camera alone. It is routine on a Hikvision system, but check your recorder — send us the model on 16454.
