Public address audio covers the speakers and amplifiers that carry announcements and background music around a building. The part most often chosen wrong is the architecture: analogue or network gets decided on the price of the speakers, the only number in the decision that is not permanent.
How to choose
- Analogue or network. On analogue the cable is the zone plan: a zone is a run back to one amplifier channel, so splitting a floor later means a ladder and a cable pull. Network moves the problem to switch capacity and addressing, and the cost with it.
- Zones, and who speaks into each. Count the areas that must be addressed separately, then settle who may page into each. That schedule fixes the outputs before a speaker is priced.
- Where each point is mounted. Indoor or outdoor, ceiling, wall, pendant or horn — the mounting surface and the weather decide the model more than the driver does. A recessed unit needs a cut-out and clearance above the tile; blockwork and an open industrial roof are different jobs.
- Size the amplifier last. List the zones, count the points, total the load per zone, then check the sum against the amplifier with headroom left. Guessed the other way round, it becomes a constraint that appears at commissioning.
