Transmission

Transmission is everything between the camera and the recorder: cable, switches, fibre, transceivers and the terminations at both ends. It is usually the last line on a quotation and the first thing to fail on site, because what breaks an install is distance, not the device.

How to choose

• Measure the run first. Copper Ethernet stops at one hundred metres, and the moment a site spans more than that the question is no longer which switch, but where the fibre lands, which fibre type it is, and who terminates it.
• Size the uplink, not the access ports. A camera system runs out of room on the single link back to the recorder, not on the ports the cameras plug into. Every stream and every playback session crosses that hop, so leave headroom for positions added after handover.
• Bond and protect anything between buildings. On runs between separate structures the thing that destroys equipment is a potential difference between their earths. The earth bond and surge protection belong in the specification, not in the callback — one reason fibre is specified across yards and compounds.
• Buy the cable and the terminations properly. Copper quality, run discipline and how each end is punched down decide site performance far more than the box in the cabinet does.
